Different Types Of Achilles Tendonitis
The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons explains that there are two types of Achilles tendonitis.
- Noninsertional Achilles Tendinitis is the first kind. If you have this condition, then the middle section of your Achilles tendon will get thick and swollen due to the breakdown and tiny tears in the tendon. Athletes who are young and active are more likely to suffer from Noninsertional Achilles Tendinitis.
- Insertional Achilles Tendonitis is the other type. It affects the area where the tendon attaches itself to the bone of your heel. The lower portion of the Achilles tendon is damaged as opposed to the middle portion. You can develop this condition even if you don’t play sports and are not active.
How To Treat Achilles Tendonitis
There are a variety of ways to treat your Achilles tendonitis depending on the severity of the injury. One of the first things to do is rest. Take some time off from your activities.
In addition to running, people that play football, baseball, basketball, tennis, volleyball, and gymnasts are all at risk as well. That’s because these sports all involve changing speeds, directions, and pivoting quickly. If you play these sports, rest until fully recovered.
You should also ice your Achilles for up to 20 minutes several times per day. The ice helps keep the swelling go down and helps with inflammation as well. You can also use compression by wrapping athletic tape around the affected area. However, be careful not to wrap it too tightly as this could potentially limit the blood flow.
